Welcome back to the Disney Magical Mindset Podcast. I’m Ruben, your Disney magic mentor and friend, and I’m here to help you unlock the magic within and become the hero of your story. Today, I’m so excited to speak to you about something that I’m extremely passionate about. I love talking about Walt and his dreams and how he made them come true. Do you ever wonder that If you were to sit down with Walt and you have that opportunity to ask him how do you make dreams come true? What do you do? What did you do Walt? Give me some advice. That’s exactly what we’re going to do today. We’re going to look at the blueprint of Walt’s success for making dreams come true. I’m so excited to share with you today, and it’s been this secret to his blueprint of success that I followed myself to be able to start a podcast that I never thought I would be doing. In fact, I had so many moments when I said to myself nah, you’re not going to do it, or you know those negative thoughts start getting in your mind that it’s not going to happen, or you don’t have the ability or the time, or do you really think that people are going to listen? All those things I’m telling you, I am here today stepping into this dream of a podcast, this dream of launching a website, this dream of actually putting myself out there to help people experience the magic. I mean, I’m telling you it’s because of Walt Disney and his story and his blueprint to success that has even given me this ability to be courageous enough to step into this dream. And I just want to encourage you, because that’s what I do to let you know that whatever it is you’re dreaming about, whatever it is you’re thinking about, whatever that thing is in your heart that’s tugging at you day and night and you are hesitant to go for it. You are telling yourself I don’t know if I can do this. Please hear me, it is possible. And Walt Disney is going to show us how.
All right, you’re probably ready, like me, to hear Walt’s secret of making dreams come true. And here’s what Walt said. I’m quoting now from the master of dreams, from the dreamer of dreamers. Here’s what he said Somehow I can’t believe there are many heights that can’t be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C’s. They are curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy, and the greatest of these is confidence and constancy, and the greatest of these is confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all over, implicitly and unquestioningly. Now here’s what I want to do. I want to go through each of them. I’m so excited, I’m so pumped because I shared with you earlier these dreams that I’m stepping into and I’m making happen because of this blueprint. But I’m even more excited because there’s still more dreams, and so I use this as motivation to make that happen, and I want you to do the same.Ruben: 3:34
All right, let’s pause here for just one second. I need you to just let this sit in your magical heart right now, because I had to sit with this. Walt just gave us the blueprint to his success. He gave us his secret, and if he’s giving us this secret, it’s because it’s not really a secret at all. He’s not keeping it to himself. Walt is telling you and me this because he believes that if there’s something deep in your heart that you believe is a dream worth pursuing, he’s telling you and me go for it. And here’s how you do it with these four c’s. I just love this about walt. He’s not hoarding his magical blueprint to success. He’s giving it away because he knows that dreams are made to come true. He’s a living example of what happens when you follow this blueprint. So here we go with Peter Pan to Neverland.Ruben: 4:35
Let’s dive into the four C’s, and the first one is curiosity is curiosity. You know, I often wonder if I ever had the chance to sit down with Walt, what kind of questions would I ask? What would I say? And I’ve got a few that I would want to absolutely ask him. But as I study his life more, you know what I think the tables would turn and he would be the one asking me questions. You know why? Because Walt was curious. He still had the spirit of a child. Isn’t that what you see with Walt? He was an adult but he never grew up. Isn’t that beautiful? He had this curiosity of a child, just like Peter Pan in Neverland. In fact. He once said every child is born blessed with a vivid imagination. But just as a muscle grows flabby with disuse, so the bright imagination of a child.
Pal, if you have children of your own. Or, watch this, if you are in a car going on a road trip, and the question of all questions that comes up every 30 seconds is are we there yet Right? And the reason why is because kids are curious, they’re excited, they want to know what’s coming, they want to know how long it’s going to take, and they ask questions after questions after questions. I love this. So whenever my kids ask me questions, I am intrigued, like I want to know, because they’re so curious and I never want that to stop. For them or for me. This is one of the secrets to Walt’s success for making dreams come true. Stay curious and keep asking those open-ended questions. Dream more and do what kids do. At least. My kids ask the same two questions again and again why and why not? Again and again, why and why not? And you will continue to cultivate that spirit of Walt Disney’s curiosity.
Walt is a prime example of curiosity, endless curiosity. He loved learning, exploring and asking what, if, why and why not. You see it throughout his life, and this curiosity actually led him to push the boundaries of animation, sound and storytelling. It was this curiosity that allowed him to do the things that no one else was doing. Just let it sink in. This is so good. Take Steamboat Willie, for example. In the late 1920s, most cartoons were silent. I wanted you to just feel the silence there. But Walt asked what if we added synchronized sound? He was curious. That single curious question changed animation forever, making Mickey Mouse a household name and setting Walt’s company on the path to greatness. All because Walt asked these questions that no one was asking. Or maybe they were thinking about the question, but they weren’t even asking the question.
Like Walt Disney, curiosity isn’t just for inventors or artists, or it’s not even for Walt Disney alone. It’s for anyone chasing a dream, it’s for you and it’s for me. So what’s something you’ve been curious about lately? Maybe it’s a new skill, a career change, or even starting your own business, or maybe starting a podcast. Follow that curiosity. It might just lead you to your next big breakthrough. This next C Walt said, is the greatest Confidence.
Walt believed in his ideas even when others didn’t. When he pitched Disneyland, many people thought it was a terrible idea. Banks turned him down. His family told him he was crazy. Critics called it Walt’s folly. But he didn’t care what anybody said. You know why? Because he was confident in his dream and he was confident in himself to make the dream happen. In fact, psychological studies show that high achieving, successful people are not overly concerned about what others think. And when I look at Walt Disney and study his life, it is so true of Walt. He never catered to his critics. He never worried about rejection. He kept selling his dreams because he was confident in his dreams. He knew that what he was dreaming, that that thing that was in his heart, was so real, so strong, and he believed in it so much that even when others told him it could not be done, he was so confident in himself he knew he could get it done.
Here’s the one habit that Walt Disney and all self-confident people have in themselves. You know what it is? It’s the ability to keep the promises they make to themselves. This is what creates confidence. When you make those promises but then you keep them. Guess what happens when you keep them? Then the next time you make a promise or the next time you’re committed to doing something, you keep it, you make it and you gain confidence and confidence Every time you do it. It’s like a domino and it impacts the next domino and the next one, and the next one, and you continue to create this confidence in yourself that what you say you’re going to do, you actually do it.
When you’re in the habit of keeping promises you make with yourself, you’re on the pathway to self-confidence. You are the only one who gets a say in how much self-confidence you want. It’s a mind thing. Do you want self-confidence? If you do, it’s yours, it can be yours. This is what we see in Walt Disney, right? But you can have it too. When you break internal agreements, you’re only fighting with yourself, and so I want to just encourage you with, again, the spirit of Walt’s confidence. It’s not something you get overnight, but you can start today. You can start keeping the promises you make to yourself, and when you keep them, I guarantee you you will start to gain more confidence. More confidence which is not about doing away with fear. It’s about moving forward anyway because of the agreements you made with yourself, which leads to the third C courage.
Walt took bold risks throughout his life when he decided to create Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This man bet everything he had on this one movie. I mean, he pretty much mortgaged his home. That’s how much he believed in it. That’s the courage he had to keep going forward with this dream. And guess what? It paid off big time. The payoff wasn’t just the $8.5 million the picture earned Just think about that for 1937. But the real payoff for Walt was that Snow White was loved by the public. People knew that whatever Walt did next was going to be exciting and worthwhile, but it would have never happened if he didn’t have the courage to do so. He did something everyone told him was impossible and he succeeded. And this is one of the things I love about Walt he never allowed fear that he may have had to freeze his dreams. In fact, if Walt had any fear, it was the fear of boring people.
See, courage please listen to this isn’t the absence of fear. This has helped me so much. Courage is feeling the fear and taking action regardless. Think about a dream you’ve been putting off. What’s one bold step you can take today to move closer to it? Remember, every great achievement starts with a little courage. I think I can. I think I can, I think I can. You got this. So please hear me 99% of our fears is often an indication of something greater on the other side, and sometimes we never get to the other side because we’re afraid to fail and then we miss out on the greatness that is waiting for us, that is waiting for you, and that’s not gonna be our story, because today we’re gonna live courageously. Just think of Walt today speaking to you about courage, and can you hear him say this to you Don’t allow your fears to keep you from something great that is on the other side. This is not going to be you. I know that sometimes everything in you wants to say no, but you have the power to say yes, like Walt, and not allow anything to keep you from getting to the great that is on the other side. This is courage.
You have the courage to get on Guardians of the Galaxy or the Tower of Terror, and I know what you’re thinking. I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way I cannot do it. And I want to tell you yes, you can, but just look at it from a life principle. I’m only saying this out of experience. For years I mean years I never went on Tower of Terror. I didn’t touch it. Guardians of the Galaxy, I was so scared until one day I said you know what? I’m going to build enough courage to actually go on this attraction and I did it. And I’m not trying to say you’ve got to go on Guardians of the Galaxy. I would love it actually. Come on, let’s do that together.
But what I am trying to say is that life is like that. Sometimes Our fears get in the way and they freeze our future and they cause us from going to the other side of greatness, or getting to the other side of greatness because we’re afraid. And you can take that for any aspect of your life that you are afraid of. Now I’m just using it because we’re Disney right, and I’m trying to give you an example from attractions in the park. But this is life, I’m telling you, and you have the power. Your mind is such a powerful thing and I want to continue to reinforce that that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is saying, yeah, I’m a little afraid, but I’m still going to push forward and go for it anyhow, just like Walt. Finally, the last C we have is constancy.
Walt was relentless in his pursuit of excellence Building Disneyland. You know this was no small feat. It took years of planning, overcoming setbacks and staying focused on the goal. Walt’s advice Get a good idea and stay with it, dog it and work at it until it’s done and done right. Everyone told him to give up his crazy dream. Opening day was a disaster. He practically took himself, his family and company to the brink of financial ruin to build Disneyland. Yet here we are today, living Walt’s dream, because Walt knew that wishing upon a star will only get you so far.
Now, when you look at Disneyland and you study its success, you can point to a lot of things. But first and foremost, the reason why Disneyland is a success and was successful and continues to be is, of course, because of Walt’s constancy, the result of perseverance in the face of obstacles and opposition. Walt was committed to finish what he started and his strength of character was that he refused to quit. In fact, there’s a lot of research that has been done on why successful people succeed, and you know what they discovered that rises to the top all the time. It’s this grit that successful people have. It’s a strength of character that refuses to quit, because enthusiasm is common but endurance is rare, and this is the constancy we’re talking about right here. It means staying committed even when things get tough.
Dreams take time. Do you hear me? Dreams take time, effort and and perseverance. Maybe you face setbacks or you felt like giving up. That was me at one point. I’m telling you it felt that way, but let walt’s example remind you.
The journey is worth it. In fact, that’s part of the joy is not just the finish line, but when you’re able to enjoy the race. That’s when you create magic, that’s when the real fun happens. You’re not just looking to get to the end Of course we all do but it’s the process, it’s the journey, it’s everything you’re doing to get there that you look back on. You’re like man that was worth it, man that was fun, and all the things you learn along the way. So keep going, because the world needs your dream. So there you have it, walt Disney’s four C’s to making dreams come true Curiosity, confidence, courage and constancy.
These traits not only help Walt build a magical kingdom, but can also help you bring your dreams or your kingdom to life. As you go about your day, take a moment to reflect. Which of these C’s do you need to embrace more? Is it sparking your curiosity, building your confidence, finding your courage or staying constant in your efforts? Maybe it’s all four or just start with one. I’ll leave you with one of Walt’s more famous quotes the way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. Quit talking and begin doing. Remember your dream is worth pursuing and you have the power to make it come true. You have the power to reach for that star you’ve been wishing upon and bring it down to you. If you enjoyed this episode, please, please share it with a fellow Disney dreamer, and it would mean so much to me for you to leave a positive review. This helps so much to get this magical mindset podcast out there. Until next time, keep dreaming, keep believing and remember you are the magic, because the magic is in you.
